
The airplane had just undergone maintenance in Batam, during which an engine had been changed. The plane then performed a test flight. It was enroute between Tanjung Berakit and the village of Malang Rapat (around 9 NM (17 km) South-South-East of Tanjung Berakit) about 30 minutes into the flight when the airplane disappeared from radar. The wreckage was later found in a mud puddle on the ground.
SMAC is currently on the blacklist of airlines banned from flying in the European Union.
