1 dead, 1 critically injured in plane crash near Tweed New Haven Airport

EAST HAVEN >> One person died and another was critically injured when a small Piper plane crashed near Tweed New Haven Regional Airport Wednesday morning.

Police have identified the man who died in the crash as East Haven resident Pablo Campos-Isona, 31.

The other occupant of the airplane, who was taken to Yale New Haven Hospital in critical condition, has been positively identified, but his name is being withheld pending notification of his family, said Lt. Joseph Murgo, spokesman for the East Haven Police Department.

Campos-Isona and the other occupant were practicing a touch-and-go landing when the “mayday” call was made, said Tim Larson, executive director of the Tweed New Haven Airport Authority. Campos-Isona, an employee of Robinson Aviation Inc. in East Haven, was identified as the student onboard the plane, Larson said.

However, police and federal officials said it had not yet been determined who was operating the plane at the time of the crash.
